December 10 has been declared by the United Nations and many countries to be Human Rights Day! It celebrates the unanimous passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948. 2048 provides curriculum for teachers so that on the same day each year students in many countries will learn about rights they all share.
2048 provides an easy two step process for teachers by putting all teaching materials on our website.
First, there is a 10 minute film directed and produced by students at the University of California, Berkeley, that is designed for students in secondary schools and universities in all countries.
Second, there is a simple lesson plan for class discussion.
• The week prior to December 10, teacher reviews the website and lesson plan.
• A few days prior to December 10, teacher makes general, brief, comments about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and asks students to read the Universal Declaration on the website before December 10.
• December 10. Teacher shows 10 minute film about the Universal Declaration and then leads 30 minute discussion about the meaning of the rights in the Universal Declaration.
• December 10. After discussion, teacher assigns homework that night for students to go to 2048 website and make a comment on the draft International Convention on Human Rights including answering the question "what rights would you choose and why?"
• December 11 Class 30-50 minute discusson of the comments students made on the website.
***ANY TEACHER WHO WOULD LIKE TO USE THIS HUMAN RIGHTS DAY CURRICULUM IS WELCOME! JUST SEND AN EMAIL TO KIRK BOYD, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE 2048 PROJECT, SAYING THAT YOU WILL USE THE LESSON PLAN DECEMBER 10, 2009:
